This is part 1 of a 3 part series of “What is a Managed Service Provider?” Part 1 gives you brief description of an MSP and discusses Patch Management provided by CPM Networks.

Service – to do the work that is needed to keep a machine in good condition

Provider- One that makes Services available to others

Managed Service Provider administers preventive maintenance with patch management policies, server and desktop polices, anti-virus control, remote monitoring, network monitoring and monthly scheduled customer reporting.

Patch Management policies for servers and desktops. Create policies to keep operating system patches and third part patches such as Java and Adobe updated. The patches should be reviewed prior to deployment. Microsoft has three different types of updates.

  • Security Updates are updates that fix specific product security vulnerability.
  • Critical Updates are fixes related to non-critical to critical bug’s
  • Service Packs are a combination of product fixes that may include Critical, Non-critical, security patches as well as product enhancements from the last version release.
